Would you like to have someone walk alongside you through the hardships of life?
In chapter 6 of the book of Acts, Stephen is the first individual selected to take care of the needs of the poor and oppressed. He was said to be not only a man of good repute, but also “full of faith” and “full of the Spirit and of wisdom”. From this figure comes the inspiration for the name of the Stephen Ministry. Founded in 1975 on the foundation of God’s love for the world, and unity with the church, Stephen Ministry seeks to train up individuals with the gift of caring, so that they can be the physical manifestation of God’s comfort to hurting people in the community.
For more than 40 years, over 13,000 congregations have signed up to be a Stephen Ministry congregation; 75,000 pastors and other individuals have been trained to become Stephen Leaders; and 600,000 Christians have received high-quality training to become front-line caregivers (Stephen Ministers). 1.5 million people, in the midst of grief and suffering, have experienced the blessings of Jesus through this ministry!
Living in the 21st century where we are constantly bombarded with information and news, it’s no wonder we feel so much anxiety, for our nation, for our families, and for ourselves. In the midst of scientific and technological advancement, we feel the increasing loneliness and distance between ourselves and other people. In the midst of difficulties that are seemingly unending, who can we place my hopes on? Where can we turn to for comfort?
Two thousand years ago, Jesus already comforted us with these words: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
There is a Swedish proverb that says, “Shared joy is double the joy; shared sorrow is half the sorrow”. Anyone who has felt supported in times of sorrow will understand the meaning of that saying! Stephen Ministers are trained to give one-on-one care, providing a safe, confidential environment that brings Jesus’ hope through companionship, encouragement, and prayer in the lowest moments of people’s lives. They share the pain and walk together with their care receivers!
